Official answer

Internationalization makes the code and layout adaptable; localization supplies language- and region-appropriate content. Inventory all user-facing strings, accessibility text, errors, notifications, onboarding and store metadata. Use localizable APIs and string catalogs in a suitable Xcode workflow; existing .strings/.stringsdict resources can also be supported. Do not assemble sentences by concatenating independently translated fragments.

Provide translators context, placeholders and plural variants. Languages do not all use the same singular/plural rules. Use locale-aware date, number and measurement formatting, while keeping the underlying meaning explicit. Changing the displayed currency format does not perform currency conversion, and a person's language does not determine their time zone or legal jurisdiction.

Use layouts that accommodate longer text, Dynamic Type and right-to-left reading order. Use leading/trailing alignment where appropriate, but do not blindly mirror every symbol, map or media control. Localize images only when they contain language or cultural content that requires it, and preserve accessible alternatives.

Test pseudolocalization, expansion, plurals, truncation, fallback languages, localized search/sorting and mixed-direction text. Include actual speakers and people using assistive technologies. A successful build or machine translation is not proof that the content is understandable.

Keep localization in the release workflow with missing/stale-string checks and review ownership. Route market-specific privacy, content or other obligations to qualified owners based on the actual product and region; localization alone does not establish compliance. Measure defects and task completion per supported locale rather than assuming a translation improves engagement.
