How would you explain the Customer Success Manager role and its boundaries with Sales and Support?
Instruction: Adapt the ownership of renewals, implementation and expansion to the employer's actual CSM role.

Example Answer
I see the CSM's role as helping customers turn their purchase into useful results. I'd understand why they bought, agree what success looks like, and help them overcome obstacles to getting there. That means connecting onboarding and adoption to their goals, rather than treating meetings or logins as success by themselves.
Sales usually leads the initial commercial conversation, and Support investigates product issues through the appropriate support process. I'd confirm the division of work here, because CSM ownership of renewals, expansion and implementation varies. If a technical issue threatened the customer's goal, I'd explain its business impact to Support, keep the account team informed, and help the customer understand the next step.
I'd stay accountable for coordination and follow-through without promising a fix, price or delivery date another team has not approved. The customer should know who is doing what and when they can expect an update.
Make it your own
Adapt the ownership of renewals, implementation and expansion to the employer's actual CSM role. Mention a product or customer type you understand.
Why this works
Connects customer outcomes to practical ownership boundaries and explains how the CSM coordinates a problem through resolution. GitLab's linked handbook illustrates one company's division of responsibilities; it does not define every CSM role.
Interviewer follow-up
What if the customer refuses to open a support ticket and expects you to solve the issue?
I'd acknowledge the frustration and help them enter the approved support process with the relevant context, rather than just send them a link. I'd explain that the technical team needs a tracked case to investigate properly. I'd agree how I will follow progress and communicate the business impact, while keeping technical diagnosis with the qualified team.
