I think a business analyst should be technical enough to ask better questions, validate assumptions, and work more independently, but not every BA role needs the same depth. In many environments, being comfortable with Excel, basic data analysis, and at least some SQL is very useful because it lets you inspect patterns yourself instead of waiting for someone else every time a business question...
