Example Answer
The way I'd explain it in an interview is this: For businesses, explainability improves trust, debugging, governance, and adoption. If a team cannot understand why a model behaves a certain way, it becomes much harder to catch failure modes, respond to regulators, or convince internal stakeholders to rely on the system in an operational setting.
For consumers, explainability matters because AI can affect opportunities, pricing, access, and treatment. People want to know why they were denied a loan, flagged for review, or shown a certain recommendation, especially when the outcome feels important or unfair. Explanations also make it easier to challenge bad decisions and identify patterns of bias or error.
So explainability is valuable on both sides: it makes systems easier to govern and easier to contest.
Common Poor Answer
A weak answer says explainability builds trust but never explains why businesses need it operationally or why users need it for fairness and recourse.
Limit to explain
An explanation can support a legal or audit requirement only within the applicable decision, audience and jurisdiction. It does not establish compliance by itself. A faithful explanation may appropriately reduce trust by exposing a bad dependency; the goal is informed reliance, not simply higher confidence.
