Finance and Product need different active-customer KPIs. How would you model them in Power BI?

Instruction: Use the actual eligibility, date and product rules. The three-versus-two counts are a hypothetical test case, not personal results.

Context: It makes a point-in-time subscription metric and a period-activity metric explicit in the Power BI model, including grain, slicers and independent checks.

Example Answer

I’d create two clearly named measures. Finance needs customers with an active subscription at month-end; Product needs customers with qualifying activity during the selected dates. I’d agree the eligibility rules and count unique CustomerIDs so multiple users or events do not inflate either KPI.

In the semantic model, I’d keep subscription snapshots or history and activity records at their own grains. I’d connect them through suitable customer and date dimensions, then define how date and product slicers should affect each measure. A monthly subscription snapshot and an activity date range should not silently behave as the same metric.

I’d reconcile a small example: three subscription-active customers, but only two with qualifying activity. That difference can be correct. I’d give the measures distinct labels and descriptions, show the relevant date basis, and validate both against their source rules.

Make it your own

Use the actual eligibility, date and product rules. The three-versus-two counts are a hypothetical test case, not personal results.

Why this works

It makes a point-in-time subscription metric and a period-activity metric explicit in the Power BI model, including grain, slicers and independent checks.

Interviewer follow-up

What if the business owner wants a dashboard today but the definition is still unresolved?

I’d show a clearly labeled prototype with the competing definitions and sample differences. I’d ask the owner to approve the rule before people use it for decisions. I could deliver the layout and data checks today without presenting an unresolved KPI as final.
